Boonaa Mohammed, one of the most renowned poets and spoken word artists, was born in Toronto to parents who proudly identify themselves at Oromo – the largest tribal group in Ethiopia. While Oromos are found predominately in Ethiopia, you can also find them in Kenya.
His parents came to Canada from Ethiopia in the face of intense political oppression in Ethiopia,. Boonaa, which means “proud” in his parent’s native tongue, is a graduate of Ryerson University.
According to the man himself, "I'm not really a poet, I'm just a super-spiritual revolutionary solider equipped with a quick wit and a big mouth who is down to fight for what's right that is loved and supported by like minded individuals and organizations committed to improving the lives of the disenfranchised masses, that just happens to rhyme well. My poetry is strictly a from of therapy that I use to express my inner thought, beliefs and feelings. People have told me that they enjoy my poetry. I enjoy knowing that people enjoy my poetry. If anything I say or don't say offends you, than good. As long as I have been able to stimulate thought, then my job here is done."
